Elmer Gantry is the main character in Sinclair Lewis's Elmer Gantry. Elmer, who is known to his classmates as hell-cat, is a man of about 22 that goes to Terwillinger College. He is a roughneck that drinks alcohol very heavily and smokes the occasional cigarette.
One night when Elmer was drunk he began to argue with a guy on the street about religion, and ever since then, he knew he wanted to be a minister. So instead of embarking on becoming on lawyer he decided to become a minster. After two years of seminary school at Terwillinger Colllege he was ordained a baptist minister. He was very into being a religious person in the beggining of his life.
In the middle of the book Elmer became less and less involved in the church even though he was still a minister. One day Elmer,after getting drunk, got involved with a prostitute, and was accused of seducing her and he was also accused of having sex with her. Because of this he was kicked out of the church were he was the minister .After this happened he realized that he needed to to get his life straightened out, and he realized that he needed to start listening to God and to other people that gave him advice.The quote"I was brought up to believe that the Christian God wasn't a scared and compromising public servant, but the creator of the whole merciless truth, and I reckon that training spoiled me — I actually took my teachers seriously!" helps you understand the changes that Elmer wanted to make in his life.
